Celebrating Women in Technology

Celebrating Women in Technology

Each year to celebrate Women's History Month, NC TECH takes a moment to celebrate the achievements of women while also recognizing the work still required to ensure opportunity and equity across industries. North Carolina’s technology sector is growing rapidly, and women are playing an increasingly visible role in shaping its future.

We are proud to support and work alongside the thousands of women who make up our community – our members, partners and staff. Their leadership, innovation and mentorship are essential to the strength of North Carolina’s tech ecosystem.

One of the most encouraging indicators of progress is that North Carolina ranks #1 in the nation for the percentage of women working in the technology industry (NC STIR). This distinction reflects the strength of the state’s universities, employers and professional networks working together to build a more inclusive workforce.

Behind that ranking are women designing software, managing data platforms, building startups, running enterprise IT organizations and leading some of the state’s most important technology initiatives. Their presence helps redefine what the tech workforce looks like, and what it can become.

At NC TECH, supporting women in technology is not a single initiative – it is a long-term commitment built into many of our programs and events.

LeanIn Circles

Now in its third year, our LeanIn Circles program has grown into one of the most impactful peer networking initiatives in our community. The program brings together small groups of women in tech who meet regularly to discuss career growth, leadership challenges and professional development. Since launching, more than 500 women have participated, with approximately 30 circles meeting annually across the state. These circles create space for honest conversations, mentorship and the kind of professional support that helps women navigate career transitions and leadership pathways.

Scholarship Program

Education remains one of the most powerful drivers of opportunity. Through the NC TECH Education Foundation, our scholarship program is now in its 16th year and has awarded more than $100,000 to students pursuing technology-related degrees. To date, more than 25 scholarship recipients across the state have received support through the program. Many of these students represent the next generation of women who will lead the state’s tech workforce.

Summit for Women in Tech

Our annual Summit for Women in Tech has also become a cornerstone event for the community. Now in its seventh year, the summit brings together leaders, innovators, and emerging professionals to discuss career growth, leadership strategies and the future of the technology workforce. Since the event’s launch, more than 2,000 participants have joined us for this gathering of ideas, mentorship and inspiration.

Beyond events and programs

NCTECH also highlights the voices of women leading across the state’s technology landscape. Through our Women Leading in Tech blog series, we share stories from executives, entrepreneurs and innovators who are shaping North Carolina’s digital economy. These stories matter. They highlight not only professional achievements but also journeys, mentorship experiences and lessons learned along the way.

For younger professionals or students considering careers in technology, these perspectives can be powerful examples of what is possible.

In this Womens' History Month, we celebrate the women who are already shaping North Carolina’s technology future, and those who will join the field in the years ahead.
