TECNA Annual Conference: Staff Recap
Each year, NC TECH participates in the Technology Councils of North America (TECNA) Annual Conference, an annual gathering of technology associations and councils from across the United States and Canada. While the conference is designed for organizations that support the technology industry rather than technology companies themselves, its value extends far beyond association management.
TECNA provides an opportunity to benchmark against peer organizations, exchange ideas, and explore innovative approaches to strengthening technology ecosystems. The discussions focus on the broader questions facing regional technology communities: how to cultivate leadership, accelerate innovation, foster meaningful connections, support workforce development, and create lasting value for members.
For NC TECH, participation is an investment in continuous improvement. Several themes emerged throughout this year's conference that reinforced both the direction of NC TECH's work and the opportunities that lie ahead.
Strengthening Technology Ecosystems Through Shared Learning
Although every state and region has its own economic landscape, technology associations across North America are working toward many of the same objectives. Developing talent, supporting innovation, convening business leaders, and fostering collaboration remain central priorities regardless of geography.
One of the most valuable aspects of TECNA is the opportunity to learn from organizations that are approaching these challenges from different perspectives. Rather than promoting a single model for success, the conference highlighted the importance of experimentation, continuous evaluation, and a willingness to evolve alongside the needs of the technology community.
Several organizations shared examples of creative partnerships that expanded their reach without requiring significant new infrastructure. Others described innovative networking formats designed to encourage more meaningful conversations and stronger professional relationships. Many emphasized the importance of collaborating with existing community organizations and events to amplify collective impact rather than building every initiative independently.

That philosophy closely aligns with NC TECH's mission. Artificial Intelligence as a Tool for Greater Human Impact
Artificial intelligence was naturally a prominent topic throughout the conference. However, the most compelling discussions focused less on the capabilities of emerging tools and more on how organizations should rethink the work performed by their teams.
One session challenged participants to consider a simple but important question: if artificial intelligence creates additional capacity, how should that time be invested?
Research presented during the session demonstrated that organizations are increasingly realizing measurable productivity gains through AI-assisted workflows. Instead, they are determining how to integrate it responsibly while preserving the collaboration, critical thinking, and leadership that drive long-term success.
For NC TECH, this approach reinforces the opportunity to use technology in service of its mission. By streamlining internal processes, staff can devote more time to developing high-quality programming, cultivating partnerships, facilitating member connections, and creating resources that benefit North Carolina's technology community.
Designing Experiences That Strengthen Connections
Another consistent theme throughout the conference centered on the evolving role of professional events.
Across numerous sessions, speakers emphasized that successful events are not defined by attendance alone. Their value is measured by the quality of the relationships they create, the ideas they generate, and the opportunities they unlock for participants.
Organizations shared examples of intentionally designing experiences that encourage meaningful interaction rather than simply assembling large audiences. This philosophy continues to shape NC TECH's approach to programming. Signature events, along with executive and interest networks, are designed to bring together leaders from across industries, disciplines, and regions to facilitate conversations that extend well beyond the event itself.
As member needs continue to evolve, so too must the experiences that support them. Continuous refinement, informed by emerging best practices and feedback from members, remains essential to ensuring that every program delivers meaningful value
Looking Ahead
The value of attending the Annual TECNA Conference extends well beyond the conference. The insights gained and relationships established provide NC TECH with fresh perspectives that strengthen the programs, events, research, and networks serving more than 650 member organizations across North Carolina.
Over the next 90 days, NC TECH will embark on a strategic planning process, using these learnings to help inform the initiatives, networks, and priorities that will guide the organization over the coming years. While not every idea will become a new program, each contributes to a broader conversation about how NC TECH can continue evolving to meet the needs of North Carolina's rapidly growing technology sector.
As the state's technology ecosystem continues to grow, so does the opportunity to create greater value through meaningful connections, leadership development, workforce initiatives, and collaboration.
