You're an Athlete Who Trains to Sit

Ask a physical therapist what a professional athlete and a software engineer have in common, and you'll get an answer most people don't expect: their bodies are both under load all day. One is sprinting, cutting, and jumping. The other is holding a single posture for eight, ten, sometimes twelve hours, eyes locked on a screen, hands hovering over a keyboard. Different sport — same principle. If you do a demanding thing with your body all day, you have to train for it.

We just don't think of desk work that way. We assume sitting is the absence of physical stress, the safe default. But the human body was not built to stay still. Stillness is its own kind of load — and over months and years, it shows up as the tight neck, the aching low back, the wrists that buzz at night, the headaches that arrive around 3 p.m. like clockwork. These aren't signs that something is wrong with you. They're signs that you're an athlete who has never been coached.

The hidden cost of "just sitting"

Musculoskeletal discomfort is the quiet tax on knowledge work. It's the reason focus fades in the afternoon, the reason people cut a deep-work session short, the reason a great engineer takes three sick days for a back flare that a five-minute setup change could have prevented. For companies, it adds up in ways that rarely get traced back to the source: lost productivity, absenteeism, healthcare spend, and turnover.

Here's the part leaders tend to miss: it's also one of the most fixable problems in the building. Ergonomics is among the highest-ROI investments an employer can make in its people. Well-run programs are credited with reducing workplace musculoskeletal injuries by up to 50–60%, and reputable estimates put the return at roughly $4 to $6 for every $1 spent, with some interventions landing even higher. Few wellness dollars work that hard.

What "training to sit" actually looks like

The good news is that training to sit doesn't require a gym, a new budget line, or an hour a day. It's a handful of small, repeatable habits — the ergonomic equivalent of a warm-up and good form.

  • Set your workstation like it's your equipment. Screen at eye level, elbows near 90 degrees, feet supported, wrists neutral. A stack of books and a separate keyboard can fix more pain than most people realize.
  • Make movement your default, not your reward. The best posture is your next one. Stand for a call, walk while you think, and let your body change positions every 30 minutes.
  • Build in micro-breaks. Thirty to sixty seconds of reaching, rolling your shoulders, or looking out a window resets both your muscles and your eyes.
  • Respect your eyes. The 20-20-20 rule — every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds — is one of the simplest ways to cut end-of-day headaches.
  • Notice the early signals. Tension, tingling, and stiffness are your body's version of a coach's whistle. Small adjustments now prevent big problems later.

None of this is about doing more. It's about doing the same work with better form — so your body lasts as long as your career does.

A better story for how we work

The teams that get this right don't treat physical health as a perk or an afterthought. They treat it the way a good coach treats an athlete's body: as the thing that makes everything else possible. When people feel good in their bodies at work, they focus longer, take fewer sick days, and stay in roles they love. That's not soft. That's performance.

So the next time you sink into your chair for a long stretch of focused work, remember what you actually are: an athlete, mid-season, playing a demanding position. You deserve to be trained for it.
