If you have been in a board meeting in the last eighteen months, you know the question. It comes after the agenda item on competitive strategy, or sometimes as its own agenda item now. The board wants to know what the organization is doing with AI. Not in a hostile way, but in the way that signals they have been researching, and are no longer willing to accept “we are exploring options” as a complete answer.
The honest answer, for most enterprise technology leaders in North Carolina right now, is some version of: we have made real progress in some areas, we have more pilots than production deployments, and we are still working out what our actual strategy is. That is not a failure. It is a reasonable description of where most serious organizations are in 2026. But it is a very hard thing to say in a board meeting without sounding like you are behind.
So instead, leaders say something that sounds more confident than they feel. They reference the pilots. They name the vendors. They describe the roadmap. And then they leave the meeting with an implicit commitment to move faster than they are currently equipped to move.

Board-level AI questions are rarely about the technology itself. They are about three things:
- Competitive exposure (are we falling behind?)
- Capital allocation (is this the right place to be spending?)
- Accountability (who owns this?).
Understanding which question is actually driving the conversation changes how you answer it.
When a board member asks “what are we doing with AI,” they usually mean: have we made a decision about where AI is going to matter for this business, and is someone responsible for making that happen? They are not asking for a technical architecture review. They are asking for evidence of intentional leadership.
The leaders who navigate these conversations well are not the ones with the most impressive pilot portfolio. They are the ones who have done the harder, quieter work of defining where AI will and will not create value for their specific business, and who can say that clearly without requiring the board to understand how transformer architectures work.
Use Cases, Infrastructure, and Governance: The Three Pillars of a Defensible AI Plan
A Use-Case Hierarchy
Not a list of everything AI could theoretically do for your organization, but a short, defensible answer to: where is AI most likely to create measurable business value in the next twelve months, and how do we know? A one-page view of three priority use cases with the business rationale and data readiness assessment for each is more useful than a forty-slide strategy deck. It also gives the board something concrete to push back on, which is a healthier conversation than nodding at slides.
An Honest Infrastructure Assessment
The organizations that will move fast on AI in the next two years are the ones making deliberate cloud infrastructure choices now. That does not mean launching a multi-year transformation program. It means knowing what you have, what it can support, and what would need to change to enable the use cases on your priority list. The gap between where you are and where you need to be is almost always smaller than the strategy consultants will tell you.
A Governance Answer
The board will eventually ask who is accountable when an AI system produces a bad outcome such as a wrong recommendation, a biased decision, or a security incident. Having that answer before the incident is significantly better than constructing it after. It does not require a full AI governance framework on day one. It requires a named owner and a documented escalation path.
Building an AI Readiness Baseline in 4-6 Weeks
None of this requires a large consulting engagement. The work of developing a use-case hierarchy, assessing infrastructure readiness, and establishing basic AI governance can often be done in four to six weeks with the right tactical partner and strong internal participation. The prerequisite is not budget. It is a willingness to be honest about where the organization actually is, rather than where the strategy deck says it should be.
