The Joy of Combining Professional Skills with a Passion for Service
Written By: Stephanie Styons, Executive Vice President - Wireside Communications
After spending decades in PR and marketing, I’ve had the chance to work with a variety of clients—from emerging companies to well-established corporations, as well as higher education institutions and non-profit organizations. While my professional journey has been very rewarding, it’s my volunteer work that fills my heart with joy and purpose.
Since my college days, I’ve dedicated many hours to causes that resonate with me, especially those focused on youth. My volunteer experiences have ranged from working at booths and stacking boxes to holding Board positions at organizations like the Frankie Lemmon Foundation, the PTA at my children’s schools, UNC Children’s Hospital, Frame of Minds (creators of NC STEM Explorers), and Untitled Theatre Productions.
While I still enjoy the hands-on aspects of volunteering, I find it incredibly fulfilling to apply my professional skills to help non-profits thrive. Whether it’s crafting marketing documents, developing plans, or leading projects, I’ve realized that my business experience can truly make a difference for these organizations. It feels like a natural extension of my career and brings me immense satisfaction.
Volunteering has enriched my life in so many ways. It’s about building connections, learning from others and making a positive impact. There’s something deeply rewarding about using what you know to support causes that matter.
I encourage everyone to explore their passions and get involved in their communities. Whether through volunteering, mentoring, or simply offering a helping hand, there is a unique joy that comes from serving others. If you have professional skills, consider sharing them with organizations in your area. You’ll not only help these organizations succeed but also discover a deeper sense of fulfillment in your own life.
Let’s work together to create positive change and inspire one another along the way. In giving, we often find that we receive so much more in return.
