Member Spotlight: American Tower
American Tower was founded in 1995 and is a leading independent owner, operator, and developer of digital infrastructure. Our U.S. portfolio includes wireless and broadcast towers, rooftops, Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS), and a highly interconnected data center footprint. Our newest offering is our edge data center portfolio, which enables customers to benefit from local data center infrastructure.
What problem(s) are you currently solving for your customers?
As it relates to our edge data center portfolio, our customers are increasingly looking to improve business results by leveraging advanced technologies such as AI, hybrid cloud and IoT applications. As a result, we’re launching a new data center in Raleigh, which extends the cloud to the edge and enables our customers to benefit from low latency applications.
Aggregation Edge Data Centers are located at the base of our towers and serve what we call the “network edge.” This allows us to leverage our existing global network infrastructure to extend computing beyond today’s centralized data center footprint, and create a more distributed, consistent, and interoperable experience for end customers in places like North Carolina.
We broke ground on the Raleigh data center earlier this year, and it is expected to be customer ready in the first quarter of 2025.
Tell us about some future plans for your organization.
We are optimistic in our long-term view of the proliferation of the edge, and the role we can play via our U.S. tower and data center platforms.
Why is North Carolina a great place to do business?
American Tower has had a strong presence in North Carolina for many years and we’re excited to continue our investment through the launch of our Raleigh Data Center. Raleigh was selected as the site of our first data center location for a variety of reasons; Raleigh is one of the fastest growing metro locations in the U.S. The city is also widely regarded for its rich culture, academic institutions, and access to employment opportunities across industries, making it an ideal place to reach different people across various industries. Speaking more broadly about the state, Raleigh and neighboring Chapel Hill and Durham are referred to as the “Research Triangle” due to their proximity to major research institutions and technology companies.
